Cindy Picos poses for a photo outside of her house in Auburn CA on April 3, 2024. Cindy was dropped by her home insurer. The reason: months-old aerial photos of the roof of her house, which her insurer refused to let her see. Home insurers are now harnessing artificial intelligence to sift these vast arrays of photos. Computer models are being trained to spy out underwriting no-nos, such as damaged roof shingles, undeclared swimming pools or trampolines, yard debris and overhanging tree branches. Infrared images highlight dense vegetation and other wildfire risks. The red-flagged photos are providing ammunition for huge numbers of non-renewal notices nationwide.
