Sacramento City Council voted unanimously last month to make Sacramento a “sanctuary city” for transgender people who are under increasing political and cultural attacks across the United States.
Authors of the resolution believe Sacramento is only the second city in California to name itself a sanctuary for transgender people — West Hollywood passed a similar resolution last April. San Francisco, despite having among the largest transgender communities in the country, has not designated itself a sanctuary city.
A handful of other U.S. cities have also declared themselves sanctuaries, and California became a sanctuary state for transgender people in 2022 — a move largely aimed at protecting families with children seeking gender-affirming care in states where it’s been banned or severely curtailed.
